Welcome to National Translation Month 2018! We’re so excited to share with you the new translations and events we scheduled for this month, celebrating translators and foreign authors from around the globe.
We have selected exciting new translations of poetry and prose written in Hungarian, Greek, Hebrew, French, Spanish, Romanian, German, Ukrainian, Latin, and Lithuanian; an excerpt from the novel The Tower (Epigram Books), winner of the prestigious Cultural Medallion, written by the acclaimed Singapore writer Isa Kamari and translated from the Malay by Alfian Sa’at; selections from the anthology of Palestinian poetry A Blade of Grass (Smokestack Books), including a poem by the imprisoned poet Dareen Tatour; translations of poems by the revolutionary poet Rudra Muhammad Shahidullah translated from the Bengali by the accomplished poet and translator Mohammad Shafiqul Islam; and an excerpt from the collection Haji as Puppet: an Orientalist Burlesque by Iranian-American poet and translator Roger Sedarat, in which he interrogates and challenges the western gaze toward the Middle East.
Throughout the month, NTM will also hold events across the U.S. and promote translators and their work through targeted social media campaigns. Check out our web site every day for more exciting announcements, translation news, events info, and premieres. We hope you’ll join the celebrations! To participate in #NTM 2018, visit our web site for ideas or submit your event here. We’ll list it on our site and advertise it on social media and in our newsletters.
To get started, here is an excerpt from the crime novel Russen kommen (The Russians Are Here) by Eva Rossmann, translated from German by Maria Poglitsch Bauer. Eva Rossmann is a former political journalist who has spent the last two decades writing fiction, nonfiction, and a series of very successful crime stories that won several Austrian awards. We hope you’ll like this crime story as much as we did. Happy National Translation Month!
